Arriving late because of the dinner honoring Earl Walsh were Adele Froelich and Dick Rabbitt. Absent were Earl Walsh and Joe Etten. Thomas Hopkins, a guest, was introduced by the Chairman. He is a local architect who has agreed to be of assistance to the Land- mark Commission. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved. The proposed budget drawn up by committee members Dick Rabbitt, Don Howard and Chairman Fike was reviewed. The Chairman comment- ed that the Sanborn Fire map was already on order from the Lib- rary of Congress. After some discussion a motion was made by Don Howard that it be approved for submittance to the City Council. The motion was seconded by Mary Vycital. Chairman Fike reminded those present that one of the future functions of the commission would be to seek out funds for reno- vation of historic structures within the City. The Chairman brought up the subject of the 1 etter sent to the City Council recommending that the park on Riverside Drive be renamed "Matt Weber Park." Discussion on whether or not that type of thing was the duty of the commission and what precedent has been in effect in the past for the naming of parks. The letter has been put on the City Council agenda. If the renaming takes place, it may be not be done until the Sesquicentennial is underway next year. Mike Wieser has sent a letter of resignation from the commission. The mayor is in the process of replacing him. Dorothy Uttich asked if anything had been done about asking Robert Parker Coffin of Barrington to present his slide program about different architectural styles found in northern Illinois. He has been scheduled to speak at the Historical Museum in March of 1986 but it was the opinion of several commission members that this would be an excellent vehicle to give attention to the Landmark Commission"s purposes and inspire the public to get involved. 1 The Landmark Survey Form was reviewed extensively. One of the features of the survey form wil 1 be a picture of the structure. Bud Uttich, husband of commission member porothy Uttich has volunteered to take these pictures. Some items on the survey were found to be in need of clarification. Thomas Hopkins will lend his architectural expertise in making the necessary changes to the form. The form will then be printed and ready for the survey workers. Mary Vycital and Dorothy Uttich will work with the Chairman to divide the city up irto smal 1 areas for each survey team to work on. This meeting will be at Dorothy "s on 15 August, 7:00 p.m. Dick Rabbitt suggested that a special group of the top twenty students at each of the local high school campuses be contacted to work as surveyors. These elite students will be under the supervision of Bill Day and will participate in special programs. The Chairman suggested perhaps these high school student could even receive credit for working on this survey program. A meeting for the volunteers who will be performing the survey will be held on Thursday, September 26, 1985 at the Library, 7:00 p.m. This "Survey Orientation" will be required for the workers so that they will be adequately informed of their duties. Dick Rabbitt volunteered to supply an opaque projector from the high school for the use of Thomas Hopkins who wil l be helping at the meeting by showing pictures of different architectural styles so that workers can identify features of structures. Location of the first McHenry County courthouse in the city of McHenry is being worked on by a local surveyor. It is hoped he will be able to determine the exact location of where this struc- ture was situated so that an appropriate marker may be erected. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 with a motion by Dorothy Uttich 2nd by Frank Gans. / ` 2
