Board of Police Commissioners
September 5, 2012
Commissioner Roberts called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM in the City of McHenry Aldermen’s
Conference Room. Also in attendance was Commissioner Gregorio. Absent: Chairman Haley. Others
present, Chief John Jones, Deputy Chief John Birk, and Executive Assistant Marci Geraghty.

Consideration of August 1, 2012 Minutes
It was noted Officer Candidate Lusmann’s name is misspelled in the minutes.
Motion by Gregorio, seconded by Roberts to approve the minutes from the August 1, 2012 Police
Commission meeting as amended.
Voting Aye: Gregorio, Roberts
Voting Nay: None
Absent: Haley
Motion carried.
Update on Recent Hires
Chief Jones advised Officer Zumwalt is in Step 4 of his training and is performing well in the field.
Officer Lusmann is in PTI and received his first evaluation. Chief Jones said typically, performance is
not at its peak during the first evaluation period as candidates are adjusting to the pr ogram. Chief Jones
expects to see progress in the future. Graduation date will be announced at the next meeting.
Update on Promotion Process
Due to a conflict with posting the lists of eligible candidates, Chief Jones and DC Birk requested an
amendment to the November 19th oral interview date. The commission suggested Tuesday, November
13th at the same time.
Saturday, November 10th: five interviews 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM
Monday, November 12th: four interviews 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Tuesday, November 13th: four interviews 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Gregorio made a motion, seconded by Roberts to amend the oral interview schedule as presented pending
the availability of Chairman Haley. Chief Jones will provide the board with panel questions.

Deputy Chief Birk reported 12 officers will be taking the sergeants exam on Saturday, September 8th.
The exam will be proffered by I/O Solutions at a cost of $500 for administrative fee and $75 per test.
Chief Jones and Deputy Chief Birk presented the commission with five oral exam scenarios containing
key points to gauge aptitude for sergeant candidates. A few key points covered in the questions are
knowledge, ethics, procedures, and major incidents. Deputy Chief Birk suggested the commissioners
make notes on the questions for review at the October meeting. The commissioners accepted the
proposed questions and thanked Chief Jones and DC Birk for the information. Commissioner Roberts
suggested the questions be sent to Chairman Haley in advance of the October meeting.

There being no further business to discuss, Gregorio made a motion, seconded by Roberts to adjourn the
meeting.
