Board of Police Commissioners
June 13, 2012
Vice-Chairman Roberts called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM in the City of McHenry Municipal Center
Aldermen’s Conference Room. In attendance was Commissioner Gregorio. Absent: Chairman Sean
Haley. Others present, Chief John Jones, Deputy Chief John Birk, and Executive Assistant Marci
Geraghty.
Consideration of Minutes
Motion by Gregorio, seconded by Roberts to approve the minutes of the May 9, 2012 Police Commission
meeting as presented.
Voting Aye: Gregorio, Roberts
Voting Nay: None
Absent: Haley
Motion carried.
Update on Recent Hires
Chief Jones advised Officer Zumwalt has completed Step 3 of his field training and is working solo on
the afternoon shift. All other hires by this commission are continuing to progress with their training.
As Patrol Officer Candidate Ryan Lusmann passed all required exams, he will be given the oath of office
on June 25th, at 10:00 AM in the municipal center classroom. On June 26th, Lusmann will take the power
test and on July 9th, he will leave for the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy in Glenn Ellyn.
Update on Promotion Process Timeline
Deputy Chief Birk advised criteria for written sergeants exam was posted on May 18th. The written exam
is scheduled for September 8th. A signup sheet will be posted until July 15th. Oral interviews will be
scheduled for a date to be determined by the commissioners in October. The eligibility list will be posted
on November 20th. Veterans will have until November 29th to submit a request for military points.
The interview process was discussed. In 2009, 18 candidates were interviewed in three sessions. The
Commission as a panel of three interviewed each candidate at 30-minute intervals. The interview
schedule was spread over two days. A list of interview questions will be submitted to the commission by
the September 5th meeting. DC Birk said it is possible we may have 30 or more applicants. Chief Jones
added the department encourages all eligible officers to participate in the process to gain experience.
Other Business
Due to the Independence Day holiday, the July meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 11th at 4:00 PM.

There being no further business to discuss, Gregorio made a motion, seconded by Roberts to adjourn the
meeting.
