HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 5/9/2012 - Police CommissionCity of McHenry Board of Police Commissioners May 9, 2012 Chairman Haley called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM in the City of McHenry Municipal Center Aldermen’s Conference Room. In attendance were Commissioners Gregorio, Haley and Roberts. Others present, Chief John Jones, Deputy Chief John Birk, Deputy Chief Dan Kreassig, and Executive Assistant Marci Geraghty. Consideration of Minutes: Motion by Roberts, seconded by Gregorio to approve the minutes of the March 7, 2012 Police Commission meeting as presented. Voting Aye: Gregorio, Haley, Roberts. Voting Nay: None. Absent: None. Motion carried. Update on Recent Hires Chief Jones advised Officer Zumwalt has completed Step 3 of his field training and is working solo on the afternoon shift. All other hires by this commission are continuing to progress with their training. Update on Sergeants Exam/Timeline Deputy Chief Birk advised criteria for written sergeants exam will be posted on May 17 th, including the cost to purchase written materials. October 2012 is the target date for testing and interviews. DC Birk will provide the Police Commission with a list of proposed oral interview questions by the September 5th meeting. Chairman Haley asked how many candidates are expected to be interviewed. DC Birk said approximately 30, possibly more as 90% of the candidates are usually eligible to take the test. Chairman Haley asked how many interview sessions would be scheduled and DC Birk said three. A discussion ensued about the procedure for the interview schedule used in the past. Marci Geraghty will review past minutes for information and provide it to Chairman Haley. Chairman Haley asked if Deputy Chiefs would be involved in the interview process. Chief Jones noted historically, the D.C.’s were not however if they are willing, he thinks they should participate. Deputy Chief Kreassig will not be available as he will be attending the FBI Academy and Chief Jones will be out of town. Commissioner Roberts agreed stating professional expertise would be helpful. Chairman Haley and Commissioner Gregorio agreed saying it made sense. Chairman Haley added he prefers a collaborative approach. CALEA National Conference Chief Jones and Deputy Chief Kreassig attended the CALEA National Conference in Mobile, AL. Chief Jones announced the McHenry Police Department received reaccreditation noting the CALEA panel was stern but fair. CALEA accreditation is every three years. City of McHenry Board of Police Commissioners May 9, 2012 Page 2 Other Business Chief Jones announced the department is down five officers 45 to 40) - two are off for non-duty related injuries and two are pregnant. He expects to hire a patrol officer to replace the position vacated by the resignation of Dale Hojnacki hopefully in time to attend the next academy on July 9th. Number two on the entry patrol officer list is Ryan Lusmann; #3 is Joshua Miller, and #4 is John Gende. HR Manager Zinanni is scheduling psychological and polygraph tests. Deputy Chief Birk noted candidates on the list must send a letter to Human Resources if they are no longer interested in a position with the city. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, Gregorio made a motion, seconded by Roberts to adjourn the meeting. Voting Aye: Gregorio, Haley, Roberts. Voting Nay: None. Absent: None.
