Consideration of March 5, 2014 Minutes
Discussion: Chief Jones noted a correction was needed regarding the SRO program discussion under
“Unfinished Business.” The following sentence should be amended as: “It is the department’s intention
to swear-in a new officer candidate by the end of March in time to attend the academy in April and be on
the street in September to fill the void left by the experienced officer that will be appointed the SRO.”
Motion by Mr. Roberts, seconded by Chairman Huber to approve the minutes from the March 5, 2014
Police Commission meeting as amended.
Voting Aye: Roberts, Huber
Voting Nay: None
Absent: Gregorio
Motion carried.
Unfinished Business
a) Update on New Officers. Police Chief Jones reported Zachary Piekarski was sworn-in on March
31st. Piekarski will attend PTI in Champaign, IL and graduate on June 26th.
b) SRO Program. Chairman Huber reported he was at the City Council meeting the evening the SRO
program was considered. He noted the council unanimously supported the program. The criteria
and interview process for selecting the SRO was discussed. It was determined D-156
Superintendent, Chief Jones, Deputy Chief Birk, and Commander Walsh will comprise the
interview team.
c) Eligibility List Process. Chief Jones reported after further research, it has been determined there
is no need to revise the timeline currently followed to create the Eligibility Lists as there is no
advantage to the timeline coinciding with our fiscal year budget cycle. A discussion ensued about
the possible advantages of limiting the Eligibility list to 12 candidates.
