Other Business
• Chief Jones reported he met with District 156 officials to begin preliminary discussion about the
possibility of reinstituting the School Resource Officer program at East and West Campuses.
Roberts noted it is a budgetary matter however one that must be considered. Chief Jones said in
the past, the school has paid the largest portion of the cost to have an officer dedicated as a SRO.
The cost is approximately $90K with benefits and would not begin until January 2014. Chief
Jones said the actual cost for hiring an SRO will have to be brought before the city’s Finance and
Personnel Committee prior to City Council consideration. Haley asked for a total best-guess
estimate to pay for an SRO. Chief Jones estimated it would cost around $180k. The city would
incur ancillary costs such as uniforms, training, vests, etc.

Commissioner Roberts said this more than a security issue. The comfort students get from having an
officer in the school at all times is invaluable.
Chairman Haley asked if new officers would be hired to fill the SRO positions. Chief Jones said no,
the position would be available to officers with three or more years experience and would be
interviewed jointly with the School District. The SRO would be integrated in the force during the
summer months.
Chairman Haley asked that the commission be kept informed of the progress.
• Chief Jones reported over 90 people attended Coffee with the Chief to hear a presentation on
School Safety.
