HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 2/6/2013 - Police Commission City of McHenry Board of Police Commissioners February 6, 2013 Commissioner Haley called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM in the City of McHenry Aldermen’s Conference Room. Also in attendance were Commissioner Gregorio and Commissioner Roberts. Others present, Chief of Police John Jones, Commander Laura King, Commander Tom Walsh, and Executive Assistant Marci Geraghty. Public Input: None. Consideration of November 7, 2012 Minutes Motion by Gregorio, seconded by Haley to approve the minutes from the November 7, 2012 Police Commission meeting as presented. Voting Aye: Gregorio, Haley Voting Nay: None Absent: Roberts Motion carried. Update on Recent Hires Chief Jones reported Officer Lusmann has been released to solo patrol. Commander King reported Huntley and Lake in the Hills are currently hiring patrol officers. Potential candidates on the list may be recruited by these agencies however they will remain on our list and would still be offered a position with McHenry when one becomes available. Update on Promotion Process The promotion process has been completed. Commissioner Roberts joined the meeting at 4:07 PM. Bills for Approval None. Other Business • Chief Jones reported he met with District 156 officials to begin preliminary discussion about the possibility of reinstituting the School Resource Officer program at East and West Campuses. Roberts noted it is a budgetary matter however one that must be considered. Chief Jones said in the past, the school has paid the largest portion of the cost to have an officer dedicated as a SRO. The cost is approximately $90K with benefits and would not begin until January 2014. Chief Jones said the actual cost for hiring an SRO will have to be brought before the city’s Finance and Personnel Committee prior to City Council consideration. Haley asked for a total best-guess estimate to pay for an SRO. Chief Jones estimated it would cost around $180k. The city would incur ancillary costs such as uniforms, training, vests, etc. City of McHenry Board of Police Commissioners February 6, 2013 Page 2 Commissioner Roberts said this more than a security issue. The comfort students get from having an officer in the school at all times is invaluable. Chairman Haley asked if new officers would be hired to fill the SRO positions. Chief Jones said no, the position would be available to officers with three or more years experience and would be interviewed jointly with the School District. The SRO would be integrated in the force during the summer months. Chairman Haley asked that the commission be kept informed of the progress. • Chief Jones reported over 90 people attended Coffee with the Chief to hear a presentation on School Safety. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, Gregorio made a motion, seconded by Roberts to adjourn the meeting. Voting Aye: Gregorio, Roberts, Haley Voting Nay: None Motion carried.
