The following is a copy of a written letter received from
Mrs . Novak:
On August 13, 1972, my daugher, Janice ( then 14) saved the life
of my son, Michael (then 7 yrs. ) Janice, Mike and I had gone to
McHenry and had brought the dog (a Doberman Pinscher) with us.
When we got home, I left to the place where I worked at Burton' s
Bridge. About 4:25, Janice called saying, "Nicki' s Killing
Michael! " I rushed home to find Michael laying outside, with
Mrs . Marge Connell and Janice by him. He was blood all over,
arm and legs ripped open, and the other arm had multiple bites
on it. I went into the house, got some towels for Mike, got
Mike into the car. At this moment, Mr. Jack Connell pulled up
in front of the house with my husband. Marge had sent her
husband after mine -- this was the day of our subdivision picnic
and my husband, Mike, Sr. was working there . My other son Tom,
( then 8 yes) was there also. From the hospital we called neigh-
bors to please take Tom home with them so he wouldn't go into the
house. Little Mike underwent surgery for over 3 hours and had
more than 250 inside stitches in the one arm. He spent one
week in the hospital. Very grateful and thankful to say he ' s
fine now, except he is badly scarred on both arms and leg.
Evidently this dog suffered heatstroke, which made him go
berserk, because Janice was sitting in a chair in the living room
watching TV, and Mike was standing next to her. The dog took a
drink of water in the kitchen, came through the dining room to
the living room, began growling, and headed for Mike and attacked
him. She says she didn' t know what to do, but knew she had to do
something. She called me, picked up a broom and shoved it into
the dog ' s mouth (bristle end) and got Mike and herself to the
front door and outside, where she called for help. This is when
Mrs. Connell saw and heard her and ran over to assist her.

By this time Little Mike had fallen down on the grass either from
shock, or loss of blood.
Mr. Walsh,
I know you don' t need all of this, but it was easier
for me to just copy her letter. Mayor Stanek sounded as though
he didn' t think there would be any difficulty in passing a
Resolution, so I'm proceeding with plans to honor Janice on
Tuesday, October 9 at Edgebrook School, at 7:00 p.m. I would
appreciate it if you' d have the girl in your office call me
after the Council Meeting to confirm this . Thank you for your
help.
