HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - R-81-5 - 04/20/1981 - Bottle Bill R-81-5 BOTTLE BILL RESOLUTION RECOMMENDING THE ADOPTION OF LEGISLATION REGULATING THE WHOLESALE AND RETAIL SALE OF BEVERAGES IN RETURNABLE CONTAINERS WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of McHenry finds it in the best interests of its citizens of the State of Illinois to limit, control , and decrease the creation of non-returnable container wastes in order to reduce municipal solid waste collection and sanitary landfill costs for economic and environmental benefits; and WHEREAS, the City Council of McHenry does find that regulating the wholesale and retail sale of beverages in returnable containers will fos- ter and promote these benefits in McHenry and throughout the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, the City Council of McHenry does find that such regulation is most effective when adopted on a regional or statewide basis; and WHEREAS, studies conducted in other states where legislation regulating the sale of beverages in returnable containers has been adopted indicate that such legislation effectively reduces beverage container litter as well as the volume of solid waste generated and the costs of solid waste disposal . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Council of the City of McHenry, McHenry County, Illinois, that it urgently recommends that the General Assembly of the State of Illinois adopt legislation requiring beverage containers sold in Illinois to be returnable with a refundable deposit. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be transmitted forthwith to the Illinois State Legislators of the Thirty-third District and to Illinois Governor James Thompson.
