HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - R-86-11 - 06/11/1986 - Opposing Revenue SharingR-86-11 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States is presently considering various budget proposals for fiscal 1987, which include consideration of fund- ing programs of great importance to local governments; and WHEREAS, the City of McHenry, like many other economically hard-pressed communities throughout Illinois and the Midwest, has applied federal dollars to fund programs vital to maintaining quality public services and to promoting economic recovery; and WHEREAS, cities like McHenry cannot reasonably be expected to raise local taxes continously in the face of federal cutbacks and still be competi- tive in attracting new residents and industries to locate here; and WHEREAS, various alternatives have been proposed for reducing the fed- eral deficit, which would be less costly to our national economic well-being then the elimination of programs aimed at public services and economic recovery. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the McHenry City Council strongly op- poses elimination of the General Revenue Sharing Program; (the Community De- velopment Block Grant program and support to low and moderate income housing). BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council encourage the citizens of McHenry to inform themselves of the position of their Congressional delegation on these issues that could directly affect their local tax burden. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that in the interest of reducing the federal deficit, alternatives such as a spending freeze or reduction of defense and entitlement programs be considered. FINALLY, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor of the City of McHenry be directed to convey the foregoing Resolution to members of the Illinois Con- gressional delegation, including Senators Dixon and Simon, Congressman Crane and the President.
