FOX RIVER APPRECIATION MONTH
JUNE 1991
The City of McHenry has a unique natural resource, the Fox River, flowing through
its jurisdiction; and
WHEREAS, historically, the Fox River and its tributaries, through generating water power, provided
the focal point for the development of Mc Ile n ry : and
WHEREAS, McHenry citizens are becoming increasingly aware of the
importance of the Fox River as habitat for plants, wildlife, fish and acquatic organisms; and
WHEREAS, citizens value the Fox River for its biological diversity, recreational experiences,
educational opportunities, clean drinking water, flood control and natural beauty; and
WHEREAS, continued economic growth and a high quality of life depend in part upon a pleasing
natural environment; and
WHEREAS, it is important to respect and manage the Fox River in a way which will assure its
preservation for the use and enjoyment by future generations; and
WHEREAS, all citizens should be involved in efforts to clean the Fox River, practice soil
conservation, protect scenic areas, advocate recycling and be cognizant of the Fox River as a renewable
natural resource; and
WHEREAS,. during June .the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of
Conservation will work together to promote and coordinate such efforts;
THEREFORE, to increase public awareness of the importance of the Fox River as a vital natural
resource, and to promote its conservation and revitalization, I, W i 11 i a m J . Busse , Mayor of the
City of "cl!enry , do hereby proclaim June 199-1, as FOX RIVER APPRECIATION
MONTH in conjunction with the state and national observance and in keeping with the spirit of the
executive report of the President's Commission on American Outdoors. I urge all citizens to reaffirm their
commitment to protecting the quality of the Fox River and to gain a deeper appreciation of our river
heritage.
