R E S O L U T I O N
Supporting the Retention of
METRA Train Service to the City of McHenry
WHEREAS, since 1906 when the then Chicago, DesPlaines and Fox
River Railroad petitioned the Village of McHenry to grant them
permission to construct a railroad to the Village, the citizens of
McHenry have utilized this railroad for many a work and pleasure
trip; and
WHEREAS, for 90 years the railroad has been a vital
transportation link we have become so accustomed to having, that
the thought of not having the convenience and use of METRA is
unthinkable; and
WHEREAS, METRA has indicated that should the proposal from
Spring Grove to extend METRA service from Fox Lake to that
community be granted, the unthinkable could become a reality for
McHenry and we could lose our train service; and
WHEREAS, the ever expanding McHenry business/industrial
community and the City as a whole, would lose economically as well
as losing a part of our history.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City
Council of the City of McHenry go on record as wholeheartedly
supporting METRA and urging METRA to keep history and our train
service alive, here in McHenry.
UNANIMOUSLY PASSED and APPROVED this 29th day of May, 1996.

RE:
METRA Train Service
Today I received a phone call from Jeff Ladd, Chairman of METRA. As you may be
aware, there is a proposal from Spring Grove to extend METRA service from Fox Lake
to that community. According to Mr. Ladd, if that proposal is accepted, there is a
good possibility that McHenry will lose its train service since METRA may not be able
to support two spur lines in the County. Mr. Ladd suggested that the Council pass
a resolution supporting train service to McHenry and that this resolution be delivered
to his office as soon as possible. I will bring this matter up during my report at
Wednesday's City Council meeting.
