CITY OF McHENRY
RESOLUTION
Supporting the Construction of
"Statue in the Square" Project
WHEREAS, the City of McHenry has directly and indirectly benefited from the
unselfish giving of McHenry County participants and casualties of the Civil War conflict
which occurred 1861-1865; and
WHEREAS, the Women's Relief Corps has endeavored to commemorate those who
gave their lives in the battles of the Civil War by securing $5,000 over a period of twelve
years; commissioning local craftsman Antonio Zoia to create a stone monument; and
WHEREAS, the "Statue in the Square" was erected and dedicated on November 3,
1909, as a Memorial to those who have so selflessly gave themselves to this conflict; and
WHEREAS, in order to further commemorate those individuals who sacrificed
themselves in this conflict, McHenry County resident and United States Veteran James
Clegg has solicited the support of McHenry County entities to underwrite the cost of
engraving granite slabs to be placed on each of the four corners at the base of the "Statue
in the Square"; and
WHEREAS, in order to maintain the aesthetic integrity of Antonio Zoia's "Statue
in the Square", the services of his descendants, James and Anthony, have been secured
to engrave the granite slabs with each of the McHenry County Civil War casualties.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council of the
City of McHenry hereby express its support of the "Statue in the Square" project whereby
engraved granite slabs commemorating McHenry County casualties of the Civil War be
placed at each of the four corners at the base of the "Statue in the Square".
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor of the City of McHenry be directed
to convey the foregoing Resolution to James Clegg, the Project Originator and
Coordinator.
